5 Tips to Eliminating Pain and Fear in Labor | Chicago Birth Doula

Did you know that 80% of women have expressed some kind of fear towards childbirth? I think it’s pretty natural to fear the unknown, after all, we feel like we have no control over it. However, if you allow your fears to have power over you then this may impact your experience overall. Fear releases adrenaline in the body, which attacks our body’s natural pain killers. This is why I’ve put together these 5 top tips to help you eliminate fear, and therefore, pain in labor:

  1. Learn About Birth - I say this often, the more you know, the less you fear. Learning about childbirth, and anything else pertaining to the journey of motherhood that has you worried or scared is going to really ease your mind. You can do this by taking a childbirth education class, listening to positive birth stories and asking as many questions as possible to your most trusted and informed advisors.

  2. Voice Your Fears - if you are able to sit down with yourself, pinpoint your exact fears, write them down in a journal book and voice them out to yourself, you’ll be on the path to giving your fears boundaries. It limits them in some ways and stops them from festering and growing, and allows you a starting point for knowledge and understanding so you are able to tackle these worries one by one.

  3. Speak to someone you trust about your fears, preferably someone experienced who has gone through this process before

  4. Prepare for your most ideal labor - labor is a marathon and just like you would never enter a marathon without proper preparation, labor is an event to prepare for physically, mentally and spiritually

  5. Surround yourself with your biggest cheerleaders - whether this is your birth partner, your mom, your doula, your midwife.. make sure everyone that is working with you towards the birth of your baby is someone you trust and has your best interest at heart!
